Athens is better known as the capital of Greece. It is known for its ancient civilization and empire. City still has remains of 5th century BC landmarks which highlight hilltop citadel, Acropolis. It is also called the historical city and birthplace of western civilization, situated near Bay of Piraeus. When approaching from the west it is the first country to visit. National archaeological museum
The museum can be dated back to the 19th century and one of the largest museums in Greece. The museum is housed in a classical building with an area of 8000 feet. It contains prehistoric collection and ancient Greek sculptures.
The Plaka and Anafiotika Neighborhoods
It is known to be a famous tourist spot. The main attraction is the village ambiance and house painted colorfully. You will find an abundance of Greek restaurants with exciting Terrance seating.
Museum of Cycladic Art
It was created by Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris Foundation in 1986, famous for Its patron collection. It has collection of 3000 objects dated back from 4th century BC. It housed with glass and marble.
Panathenaic Stadium & Olympic Stadium
It was considered the largest building in ancient Athens with a seating capacity of 60,000. The stadium was updated in 140 AD. It is now the replica if original stadium used during the Olympics during 1896.
When to visit
Best time to explore Athens is between March and May and from September to November. Weather during this time is pleasant and sunshine is at its best and tourism is thinner as well which would result in cheap accommodation.
Athens the international airport is the nearest airport to Athens. It is 35 kilometers away from the city center. It is also largest airport in Greece and began operation in 2001.
Athens is full of nice accommodation through the accommodation price becomes slightly higher during peak time but you can find a cheap hotel near Acropolis. A luxury hotel would be in the city center and usually priced quite high.
